A fluent French speaker with a good command of English, you have the confidence and ability to take on a pioneering role. Expectations are high, and you will have freedom to grow Practical Action’s consulting and knowledge-based activities across West Africa. You are a networker, familiar with the development sector and able to run a social enterprise to generate margin. Your ambition, coupled with your people management skills, will increase Practical Action’s reputation and impact in the region.
The Regional Director has overall responsibility for growing, shaping and delivering an ambitious regional strategy. They will manage a body of consulting and knowledge brokering work, building a sustainable business and generating income for a consulting company operating a social enterprise model.
Practical Action in the UK have high expectations. The business plan is based on growth and there are no barriers to opportunities that are aligned to the organization’s change ambitions—if they can be financed and the risk is sensible. You will begin by satisfying yourself that the team has the right capabilities and then focus on managing the existing portfolio. This includes signature pieces in Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso and Senegal focused on the sectors of climate information services, energy and agriculture.
You have a good network in West Africa and and have already earned the respect of senior people you work and interact with. You are a networker who can hold discussions with people in national governments, ECOWAS and NGOs. You know how to get proposals funded and would be able to bring more francophone donors into the Practical Action portfolio.
While you are broadly familiar with development work and the sector, you recognize that this social enterprise will have a different ambiance than an NGO; it is more dynamic, less hierarchical, and expects everyone to roll up their sleeves to get results.
You will need to develop a quick understanding of the organization and be able to integrate quickly with the other Regional Directors and UK-based leaders who will be your colleagues on the Senior Leadership Team.
