Everyone has a unique way of putting together their own resume. Your resume or CV remains an important part of your personal branding. However, we believe a resume is best kept direct, simple and concise.
Here are a few tips on the key information that is generally required from you. It may be best to structure your resume according to these fields:
- Name in full
- Address
- Phone numbers (include Skype)
- E-mail address
- Visa status (where necessary)
- Dates of employment
- Organization name & webpage
- Brief two line description of organization, its size and revenue
- Position title
- Supervisor & number of subordinates
- Responsibilities in bullet point form
- Achievements in bullet point form
- All education, graduate and high school with years of completion
- Qualifications and professional memberships
- Publications
- Honors & awards
- Computer skills
- Interests
- Notice period
It is important that your most recent two to three positions, or last five to ten years, be listed in detail. No resume should be more than four or five pages in length unless you are applying for a specific role that requires you to submit more information.
Electronic resume submission
When submitting your resume remember that after it has been carefully read, it will need to be parsed and stored in a database. Therefore, the following is very important:
- Plain is better
- Microsoft word is the preferred format
- Always mention your organisations before your job titles.
For example:
UNICEF
Child Protection Officer
- Do not mix different fonts
- Do not send scanned CVs
- Do NOT use columns or tables or underlines
- Do NOT use graphics
- Do not use headers or footers
- Do NOT use page numbers in your CV
- Do not use templates like the Europass template.
- Keywords are the method by which your CV will be retrieved in searches. So make sure your CV contains the proper keywords, which are specific to your skill set, throughout your resume.
- Remove all ‘centering,’ ‘right hand margin,’ and ‘justification’ alignments.
- Use blank lines between sections but do not use blank lines within paragraphs
