About the Role

The Africa Program Manager will support the Africa Director and broader team by managing staff and systems to ensure impactful campaign implementation, program coherence, efficient operations, and connectivity to the wider Oil Change International program. 

This role’s main responsibilities include administrative, technical, and financial management support for campaign and advocacy projects, personnel management, and collaboration with other programs and teams across OCI. In addition, the Africa Program Manager will serve as a strategic thought partner to the Africa Director and act as program lead in the Director’s absence.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working in collaboration and under the guidance of the Africa Director, the Program Manager will:

Program Management:

  • Develop and Coordinate Strategy: Lead team strategy creation, ensuring alignment with program goals and integration with other teams.
  • Set Priorities and Track Progress: Establish clear plans with measurable objectives, assign ownership and monitor outcomes.
  • Support Planning and Evaluation: Oversee quarterly/annual planning and evaluate accomplishments for continuous improvement.
  • Foster Knowledge Sharing: Contribute to knowledge management and thought leadership.
  • Address Challenges: Identify and solve program issues and team challenges.
  • Leadership Support: Act as a team lead and liaise with senior management in the Africa Director’s absence.

Project Facilitation:

  • Execute Program Activities: Manage and deliver systems to achieve program and project goals.
  • Support Analysis and Communications: Facilitate project systems analysis and inter-team communication.
  • Draft and Review Reports: Ensure timely internal and funder reports are prepared and reviewed.
  • Evaluate Projects: Conduct evaluations of projects and campaigns as needed.

Personnel Management:

  • Manage Team Members: Oversee 1-2 staff and contractors, providing robust onboarding and guidance.
  • Support Campaign Strategies: Help team members prioritize and implement strategies effectively.
  • Empower and Mentor Team: Provide tools, coaching, and resources for team success and well-being.
  • Set and Monitor Goals: Establish realistic goals and deadlines, directly addressing performance issues.

Collaboration Across Teams:

  • Coordinate with Other Teams: Align Africa team goals with other teams’ strategies and keep colleagues informed.
  • Contribute to Organization Priorities: Support organizational discussions and align Africa team efforts with overall goals.
  • Ensure Compliance: Maintain adherence to OCI policies in all Africa team activities.
  • Support Operations: Facilitate budgeting, fundraising, and HR as needed.

Fundraising Support:

  • Write Grant Materials: Prepare narratives for grant proposals and reports, tracking metrics and KPIs.
  • Develop and Track Metrics: Design and collect data for funder-required metrics and quarterly updates.

Administration, Finance, and Budgeting:

  • Participate in Budget Planning: Contribute to annual budget discussions and monitor spending.
  • Track Financial Changes: Ensure budget adjustments are managed appropriately.

Organizational Values and Culture:

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain Workplans: Update quarterly and annual work plans consistently.

  • Engage in Meetings: Attend staff and departmental meetings.
  • Participate in Reviews: Incorporate feedback from 360 reviews to improve performance.

Skills and Experience

  • Extensive NGO Experience: 8+ years in international NGOs addressing social justice and progressive causes, ideally in climate and energy.
  • Leadership in Project Management: 3+ years in senior roles managing projects, developing strategies, and executing campaigns, with a proven ability to guide teams through complex initiatives.
  • Expertise in Social Justice: Understanding and experience in human rights, democracy, or climate justice.
  • Project Management Excellence: High organizational skills and attention to detail across multiple projects.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Proficient in English (written and verbal); additional African languages are a plus.
  • Commitment to Equity: Sensitivity to privilege, class, gender, and race issues, with dedication to justice in work and campaigns.
  • Passionate Advocate: Demonstrated dedication to Oil Change International’s mission with a collaborative, team-oriented work style.
